“Joutras’s photographs are lyric, evocative.” —Thomas D. Isern, Chronicles of OklahomaChThe voice seems to expand, to reach into other identities contained by visions sometimes esoteric in intricacy, poignant in passion, telling a crowded tale too dangerous and disconsolate to be only comic.Mirsky of Boston has an ear for longing, anger, contradiction, family, a smelting pot of confounded and ironic heritage; an eye for wild progress, flood, violence, the hands-on politics of Irish police force and Black power, and here, so convincing and droll and painful, the fugitive, all but isolated will of outlying Native America. An essential guide to the American grasslands and the Grasslands National Park of Canada, The National Grasslands presents a history of the region, that traces the establishment of the national grasslands as an important part of the New Deal’s social revolution. Although all were once seas of grass teeming with wildlife, they now exhibit striking differences, and range from a small lake recreation area in Texas to the enormous Little Missouri National Grasslands in North Dakota. The guide also provides a concise summary of the debates surrounding preservation and use, with special focus on the Buffalo Commons controversy
