Well-written biography about an amazing man who, although he was afraid for his life, went ahead and did the right thing anyway. This isn't just a history of indigoit's also a seamless series of travel essays, a memoir, a social, political, and cultural commentary, and lastly -- an unflinching homage to Africa and art. Buyer beware: the book's cover description, 'In Search of the Color that Seduced the World', leads one to assume that the main subject of the book will actually be about the color indigo's historical legacy and manufacture. The ending is very satisfying but with so much left unsaid, it leaves the reader with the hope that this story is far from over. However the title of the book is misleading and my sense is perhaps the publisher wasn't really sure how best to categorize it. His therapy for dealing with the trauma is to read Romeo and Juliet with us. What woman doesn't remember eating raw chocolate-chip cookie dough as a teenager?!. And the clothes! As someone who's wardrobe consists of black, white, and brownI found the sheer variety, color, and detail of the West African women's clothing deeply fascinating and inspiring. As for indigo -- its definition takes on many shapes as the book progresses. Awesome Book. What more

. 'A beggar's book outworths a noble's blood' - HENRY VIII

Derek Jacobi Bob Smith was a fragile boy from a difficult household that was presided over by an unstable, depressive mother who depended on him, an unsupportive, unavailable father and a severely disabled, beautiful sister who lived at home, largely cared for by Bob. His compassion touched me deeply'. What a lovely man, with a golden gift for words and a deep understanding of human frailties and fears. 'Written with such delicate and sensitive humanity that laughter and tears are constantly interchanging. At the age of ten he stumbled upon a line from THE MERCHANT OF VENICE - 'in sooth I know not why I am so sad' - recognized himself in this poetic, melancholy language, and found a buoy that would keep him afloat for the rest of his tumultuous life. A sad, funny and inspiring account of how one man's life was saved by Shakespeare, this will be the memoir of the year.. The Shakespearean motif is superbly handled, never tricksy or clever but true and moving. A vivid and lyrical memoir of a man damaged in childhood but redeemed by Shakespeare. He now knows every single Shakespeare play inside and out and every week Bob teaches the play to over six hundred senior citizens. I found it inspirational; it made me look at those around me more sympathetically - especially the aged

Like Shakespeare, he moved back home to Stratford in his fifties where he still lives. Born in Stratford, Connecticut, Bob Smith first became a painter but would memorize Shakespeare's plays while he worked. He began to teach classes and then went on to directing Shakespeare, mostly in smaller theatres and college campuses.
